Every morning, I sat in the same breastfeeding chair, looking out the glass doors at the trees and the beautiful ocean. 

My daughter would be snuggled in my arms, quietly nursing, gradually falling asleep while my mind wandered far beyond the horizon.

Before I learned about mindfulness and meditation, I had never been the type of person who enjoyed sitting still. Even in the quietest moments, my mind is always thinking, wondering, dreaming.

One morning, while breastfeeding, I reached for a notebook and a pen.

As I sat there, holding my baby as she drifted off to sleep, I began writing down my thoughts about what I was curious about and the skills I wanted to learn.

Then I found myself asking a question I had never seriously considered before:

If I could sit beside my younger self and share everything I know now, what choices would I make differently?

The answers came quickly.

I wanted to understand how investing worked. I wanted to become better with finances.

I wanted to learn the digital skills that seemed to be opening doors for people to work from anywhere. I wanted to understand the online world that so many of my friends had become part of.

I wanted to learn how to care for my body, mind, heart, and spirit. I wanted to understand myself more deeply and live with greater purpose and intention.

I wanted to know what truly mattered to me, what values I wanted to live by, what beliefs I needed to let go of, and what parts of myself needed healing before I could become the mother—and the person—I wanted to be.

As I continued writing, I realized this wasn’t really about learning new skills…

It was about becoming a better version of myself.

I wanted to be a better mother. A better role model for my children. I wanted to prove to myself that I was still capable of learning, growing, and becoming more than the limitations I had placed on myself.

Because deep down, I wasn’t just trying to build new skills. I was trying to build a better life.

Looking back now, I realize that that breastfeeding chair became more than a place where I nourished my child. It became the place where I began rebuilding myself, too.

In this article, I’ll share how I went from feeling lost after motherhood to slowly learning how to rebuild confidence after a career break, developing new skills, and believing in myself again.

When I Lost Confidence After Motherhood

After years away from my career, I had lost confidence in myself.

I realized my previous skills don’t apply to the fast-changing world where technology is evolving rapidly. Moreover, the skills I have require me to be on-site, and that’s no longer possible in my current situation.

I thought that once the children were older, once life felt less overwhelming, or once I figured out what I wanted to do next, my confidence would magically return. 

But it never happened. 

Instead, the longer I stayed away from my career, the more disconnected I felt from the woman I used to be.

I had dreams and ambitions, but I didn’t know where to start. The longer I stayed stuck, the more I questioned whether I was still capable or had something valuable to offer.

I remember feeling torn between who I once was and who I was becoming. Each path seemed overwhelming, and every possibility felt uncertain. For a long time, I mistook that uncertainty for a lack of ability.

Like many mothers trying to figure out their next step, I started exploring different possibilities.

At one point, I thought the food business might be my path. Having attended culinary school, I felt it was a natural direction to pursue.

I poured time, energy, and hope into the idea. But the reality was that, after becoming a mother, it wasn’t the right fit for the life I wanted to create anymore. While it was disappointing at the time, I’m grateful for the experience, because it taught me something important:

Not every step forward has to be the final destination. Sometimes it’s simply part of discovering what is truly meant for you.

What kept pulling me back was something I had been curious about for years…

The online world.

How to Rebuild Confidence After a Career Break

I watched friends build careers working remotely. I saw opportunities that didn’t exist when I first entered the workforce. Technology had transformed the way people worked, creating flexible opportunities that seemed impossible years earlier.

What excited me most was my love for writing. I felt this was a great opportunity to hone my skills and share my thoughts through my writing.

The more I observed, the more curious I became about whether I could build a future in this new world, too.

What started as curiosity slowly turned into action. 

I began reading books, taking courses, and learning skills that were completely different from anything I had done in my previous career. 

Instead of draining me, it energized me. Instead of feeling like something I should do, it felt like something I genuinely wanted to learn.

I wasn’t trying to reinvent myself overnight. I was trying to prove to myself that I could still learn. 

And with every new skill I practiced, a small piece of my confidence returned. 

It didn’t come back all at once.

It came back slowly, one small action at a time. For the first time in a long time, I started to believe I could build something new for myself.

At the time, I didn’t realize that this simple habit of learning and self-discovery would become the foundation for rebuilding confidence after motherhood. 

By slowly taking action, I paved my path toward learning how to rebuild confidence after a career break, rediscover my identity, and believe in myself again.

What Rebuilding Confidence Really Looks Like

Rebuilding your confidence after a career break for motherhood is not a straight path back to who you once were.

It doesn’t happen the moment you decide you’re ready. And it doesn’t return because life suddenly feels easier.

Confidence is built in ordinary moments, when you choose to learn something new even while doubting yourself… when you follow curiosity instead of fear… when you take one small step forward even if you don’t feel fully prepared.

Because the truth is this:

Confidence is not rebuilt by waiting until you feel ready. It is rebuilt by taking small actions, learning new skills, embracing curiosity, and proving to yourself that you are still capable of growth and success.

If you are in a season where you feel lost, behind, or unsure of where to begin, I want you to know this:

You have not lost your confidence forever. You are not too late. And you are not starting from nothing.

You are simply in a season where confidence is asking to be rebuilt—not all at once, but gently, patiently, through the way you choose to show up for yourself every single day.

Confidence didn’t return when I suddenly believed in myself.

It returned when I gave myself permission to learn again.

It returned when I became a beginner.

It returned when I stopped focusing on how far behind I felt and started focusing on what I could learn today.

Looking back now, learning how to rebuild confidence after a career break wasn’t about finding the woman I used to be.

It was about becoming the woman I was meant to become.

And it all started with a notebook and a pen, a breastfeeding chair, and a simple decision to invest in myself again.
